ultraPacer Compare Activity to Plan

Overview

ultraPacer is a web tool that helps ultra runners create plans for races and long runs. The tool uses course data and runner preferences to generate split-time tables, which users can further customize by adding notes.

Problem

Athletes needed easily-digestible data to understand how their recorded activities compared to their plans

Untangling data

Previously, paces were overlaid on the elevation profile in one chart, making them hard to read. Separating the charts allows users to compare data of the same kind across plans and activities

Chunking data

Data was reorganized into sections for easier scanning and locating individual data points

New assets

New charts and data visualization on this smaller feature can be reused on bigger projects, like the course page redesign

Future plans

This design repackages existing ultraPacer data into appropriate chunks, paving the way for new featured data down the line.

This is a first step towards making historical data useful in creating plans on ultraPacer. We can show a user normalized data - paces after stripping away external factors like elevation, terrain, and heat - which can be used to plan equivalent or improved performances on other courses. I theorize that this will drive further engagement on the platform.
